The Outsiders
Literature Circles
We will read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton as a whole class literature discussion novel. Each day, students will fulfill a literature circle role, focussing on one reading and reflecting on one reading comprehension strategy at a time. Students work should be:
- complete
- organized
- includes supporting details and ideas from the novel
- thought-provoking as to inspire discussion from the rest of the group
The roles are as follows:
Discussion Director: questioning and higher- level thinking about the novel
Real World Connector: making connections to self, text, and the world using supporting evidence

Instructions: In small groups, students de-construct reviews of popular films. Together as a class, we will create the format for our own film reviews on The Outsiders movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
