Poetry: Express Yourself In A Meaningful Way
Unit's Big Idea: language can be used as a powerful tool to express yourself and to understand the world around you. For some, language acts as an outlet to be able to express thoughts, frustrations, successes, and so on. Poetry/ spoken word has the positive effect of helping individuals to work through personal, social, political, and global issues that they are having trouble understanding. Having a firm grasp of literary devices and reading strategies such as inferencing allows individuals to truly understand and evaluate our ever-changing world. This is especially true as media literacy develops. By the end of this unit, students will be able to find the important ideas and messages sent through the use of language in various media works and through poetry (including lyrical poetry/ song writing).
